What people are saying about Tutor Doctor

TORONTO (April 20, 2009) – As vast demand for tutoring services gives rise to new and improved franchise concepts, a market leader is clearly emerging. By honing in on what’s most important to students and their families – affordability, privacy and convenience – Tutor Doctor is on course to become a global franchising giant in the supplemental education industry.

As one company executive puts it, “when it comes to creating the ultimate franchise concept and teaching model in supplemental education, Tutor Doctor has studied the competition and aced the marketplace test.”

Today, with 41 franchises operating throughout Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom, parents and students are increasingly choosing Tutor Doctor’s affordable, in-home, one-on-one teaching model over traditional storefront learning centers. The trend has lead to a parallel interest in the franchise opportunity.

Tutor Doctor’s original founder started the concept nearly a decade ago with a simple idea and a desire to make a difference. He wondered why parents had to adjust to their families’ busy schedules and drive halfway across town just to put their child into a crowded classroom, when in fact it was the classroom experience that their child was struggling with in the first place. A few years later, investors saw the market opportunity and began franchising the concept.

“Quite simply, our franchise system is growing because we’ve pinpointed and we’re delivering exactly what parents and students want – privacy, flexibility and personalized, quality tutoring services,” said Tutor Doctor President Frank Milner, who is known for growing one of Canada’s hottest technology franchises to top in its category. “Every day, students silently struggle with the many-to-one teacher to student ratio in our school systems,” he said. “Tutor Doctor’s one-on-one model provides the push these students need in a setting in which they are extremely comfortable. As a result, everyone in the house breathes a little easier.”

The Tutor Doctor model particularly resonated with Milner, who experienced firsthand the toll that academic struggles can take on a family. He recalls many nights coming home after work to find his school-aged child having a “math meltdown” as his frustrated wife struggled to help. After researching the segment and talking with families, he quickly realized he was not alone.

In fact, the rise of tutoring is becoming so pervasive it is changing the face of American education. Due to heightened competition in the classroom and governmental programs requiring schools identified as failing to provide tutoring to students, this $4 billion dollar per year industry, once an upper-class phenomenon, has extended to the middle class and beyond and continues to grow at a rapid pace.

“In today’s fast-paced world where dual incomes and high academic competition are the norm, Tutor Doctor is a business that will continue to be in demand because of its flexibility and proven results,” Milner said.

In addition to servicing school-age students needing help in various subjects, many families also hire Tutor Doctor to help students get ahead and prepare for larger challenges, such as advanced classes that could help them get into a preferred college or university. Tutor Doctor has also proven valuable for the rapidly growing home-schooled population, as well as for seniors wanting to learn technology skills.

Tutor Doctor franchisees often say with pride that more than making a dollar they make a difference by helping students and their families. They also become involved in community events, as well as work with school districts and the tutors.

US President Barack Obama on education

Raise Standards to Compete with Indian Kids: ObamaWashington: US President Barack Obama urged Americans to raise their standards of education as they have to compete with the students of India and China.Addressing a town hall meeting at Costa Mesa in California on Wednesday, Obama emphasised the need to raise the standards of education and put more efforts in education, which he had been stressing upon since his election campaign days. "It can't just be a single high-stakes standardised test -- but we do need to have strong, powerful measures of performance, because schools are like anything else," Obama said. "We can't afford our kids to be mediocre at a time when they're competing against kids in China and India who are actually in school about a month longer than our kids," he said. "So there's a whole bunch of reforms that we're going to have to do," he added. He said that this is not the job of teachers alone and parents too have an important role to play in this regard. "You can't put the entire burden on a teacher. If you're not making sure your child does their homework, if you're not reading to them, instilling a sense of excellence and a thirst for knowledge in them, then they're not going to do very well, no matter how good your teacher is," he said.

I am writing to let you know about our experience with Tutor Doctor. My son is in grade 9 and had some challenges in his English and Math classes, during the first term. My husband and I felt that he would greatly benefit with some extra help in the way of tutoring.

Once we started searching for tutoring services, we found most places were very rigid in their options. We knew we wanted to have someone come into our home, as opposed to having our son go back into a classroom setting. In my search on the internet, I discovered the Tutor Doctor website. I sent a message to find out more about their services. I was pleased to have a response by the very next day.

Todd Weagle, the franchise owner and education consultant, for the Halifax area, arranged an initial consultation. During the consultation, our son was assessed to find out where his challenges were, as well as, his personality type. This assessment helps to determine what amount of sessions would be beneficial, and more importantly, which of the available tutors would best suit our son.

The service that we have received from Tutor Doctor has been outstanding. The choice of tutor was excellent. Chris, our son’s tutor, is very personable, knowledged and creative in his preparation, for each session. We have found an increase in confidence, in our son, which has been shown in his work, attitude, marks and teachers recognition.

We have been pleased with the flexibility of choosing the days and times that fit our family’s hectic schedule, as well as, the personal one on one instruction in the privacy of our own home. The payment options have also been tailored to our specific needs and those of our sons. The follow up, by Todd, has ensured our happiness and satisfaction with the level of customer service.

In conclusion, we have, and continue to be very pleased with all aspects of our relationship with Tutor Doctor. We have referred, friends of the family to the Tutor Doctor and would highly recommend their tutoring services to any family that is feeling the stress of school challenges with their children.

About Tutor Doctor

About Us

About 10 years ago, John Hooi had a simple idea and a desire to make a difference. He wondered why parents had to adjust their family’s busy schedules and drive half way across town just to put their child in another classroom with more kids…when in fact it was the classroom experience that their child was struggling with in the first place. John wondered….

  • What if a tutor could come directly to the child’s home to deliver tutoring services instead of fragmenting a family’s precious time together by forcing parents to act as “taxi drivers”?
  • What if there was flexibility in the tutor’s schedule so that tutoring time slots could be scheduled to accommodate for a family’s busy schedule?
  • What if a struggling child could get one on one attention instead of being limited to the “one-to-many” teaching models used by most extra-curricular learning centers?
  • What if a tutor could develop a personalized program by working with the child’s existing homework and school curriculum instead of loading more standard textbook work on an already overwhelmed child?
  • What if average families could get access to top tutoring resources sometimes reserved only for wealthier families?

These questions and more were eventually answered through the development of the Tutor Doctor program. Over the last 10 years, the Tutor Doctor vision has taken shape. In 2003 the company turned to franchising as a way of expanding the company’s impact and meeting the vast market demand. Now with offices internationally, the Tutor Doctor vision is becoming a reality as the lives of students and their families are being positively impacted.
